Preparation for Post-Secondary Transition

Students will benefit most from this content if they have previously completed Review of the Personal Profile and Personal Perceptions and the World of Work. Some of the information that students may need to explore is taught in Financial Education in Secondary 5.

The competency "Takes a position on a financial issue" from the Financial Education program requires students to select an option... Two of the three financial issues of the program of study—entering the workforce and pursuing an education—are particularly relevant for this ACGC item.

The psychology of your future self

In order to meet the objectives of this ACGC item students must:

Self-regulate in order to prepare for post-secondary transition

The Learning Strategy for this ACGC is SELF-REGULATE. This means that the lesson must explicitly teach students how to self-regulate in preparation for the future.

SELF-REGULATE:

To observe oneself in order to make adjustments to behaviours and knowledge related to tasks and ways of doing things. Self-observe, find information and self-adjust accordingly (Bégin 2008)

Students will:

Self Observe regarding the transition, e.g.:

identify what makes them happy and engaged
preconceptions about their chosen future
perceived level of preparedness
concerns and fears
coping skill and anxiety
mindset, or sense of self-efficacy
relationships that may evolve during the transition
strengths and virtues that will prepare the student for success

Find Information about their future choices e.g.:

job search skills, study skills
organization strategies
financial planning and tax reporting
expectations of employers or academic institutions
current status re graduation or acceptance into a program
transition out of the family home
physical layout of school or workplace next year
commuting to school or work next year
new relationships that may support the transition

Self-Adjust based on the new information:

set goals for personal growth and skills acquisition
make to-do lists and set timelines to prepare for the future
review and revise personal medium and long-term plans
reflect on changes in perception and preparedness

Self-Observation:

This section of the ACGC lends itself well to a structured journal writing exercise.
Students could create a video in which they play their future selves, engaged in the activities (school, job, travel, community service, etc.) that they have selected for next year and then comment on the behaviours they observe.

Teaching Ideas:

Finding Information

Based on the previous self-observations, students should engage in individual research projects to "fill in the gaps" that were identified. Ideas might include:

Invite a CEGEP student, a Vocational Education student, and someone who is apprenticing to come into class and answer questions
Arrange for students to attend "Student for a Day" sessions in a variety of programs and report back to the class
Attend Open Houses and Job Fairs with students
Encourage students to job shadow for a day and create a video or written report on the experience
Invite someone from a financial institution to come in and discuss how to manage a bank account
Log on to MyBlueprint and check the Money tab. Have students create a budget for the first month they are living away from home.

Teaching Ideas:

Self-Adjust

In small groups, have students discuss how what they have learned in the Finding Information section above, has influenced the perceptions of the future that they collected in the Self-Observe section
Have students reflect on how gathering information impacts their level of preparedness and therefore, their readiness for the transition out of secondary school
Have students compile a list of adjustments that they can implement to be better prepared for the transition
Have students create SMART goals so that they are successful in making the adjustments they have listed
