Academic Preferences in Relation to the Job Market

In order to meet the objectives of this ACGC item students must:

Select occupations that match his/her academic preferences

The Learning Strategy for this ACGC is SELECT. This means that the lesson must explicitly teach students how to select information.

SELECT:

Using different means and according to predetermined or spontaneous criteria, research and identify relevant or useful information.(Bégin 2008)

make connections between school and the job market
know how to use criteria in order to select relevant information
select trades and occupations that match their academic preferences

Survey your students to find out how they like to learn with this Outlook form. You can duplicate it and make it your own.
Modify the following survey for your students so they can rate their preference for various subjects, tasks, school activities and extracurricular activities. Discuss the results.
Explain that a person’s preferred subjects are often those for which his or her Sense of Self-Efficacy is the strongest (make connections and apply the previous ACGC).
Have students review their report cards and discuss how academic preferences can influence their achievement
Have student take the Interests Survey on MyBlueprint.
Once a week, show a career video from on of the following sites and discuss how they might relate to academic preferences
Have students Match Occupations in MyBlueprint. Encourage students to explore occupations that they are not familiar with. Students should view five to ten different occupations
Have students select two or more occupations from those they have learned about that they feel are a good match to their academic preferences
Students can add the occupations they have selected to their MyBlueprint Portfolio or they can create a poster showing the occupations they have selected
