Draft of a Personal Profile

In order to meet the objectives of this ACGC item students must:

Develop a draft of a personal profile based on his/her interests, aptitudes, aspirations and values

The Learning Strategy for this ACGC is DEVELOP. This means that the lesson must explicitly teach students how to develop information.

DEVELOP:

Reformulate or transform information so that its main characteristics or components are reflected or expressed in different ways.(Bégin 2008)

Examples:

paraphrase, formulate examples and make analogies

What is a Personal Profile?

In the context of the ACGC, the concept of profile can be understood as the sum of the elements that characterize a person. (Villers 2004) (MEES, January 2020) Drafting a Personal Profile is an essential step so students can move forward to anticipate life beyond secondary school because “they need to know who they are before looking at the possibilities open to them and finally making their educational and career choices” (MEQ 2002, 20).

Students Will:

Assemble everything they have learned so far about themselves
Formulate definitions of the terms interests, aptitudes, aspirations, values, in the context of compiling a personal profile
Make an inventory of their interests, aptitudes, aspirations, values
Select the elements of the inventory they have compiled that best represent the student in Secondary III
Use examples from their experience to illustrate the interests, aptitudes, aspirations, values that they have chosen to reflect their personality
Learn how to develop a clear profile of themselves by using analogies and examples
Understand how developing an idea can clarify thinking and influence decision-making

FSL Curriculum Links

Teaching Ideas:

Brainstorm definitions for interests, aptitudes and values. Discuss aspirations later, based on your understanding of these terms
Brainstorm everything that students already know about interests, aptitudes and values.
Brainstorm, either orally or using written prompts, everything that students already know about their own interests, aptitudes and values.

Interests

Use interest inventories to help students create lists of attributes that they feel describe them well
Have students take online surveys to determine where their interests lie, e.g.
- MyBlueprint.ca (Interests Inventory)
- Holland Code
- Career Interest Survey
Have a Holland Code Party in your class to help students see where their interests lie
Have students select the interests that they feel describe them best and give examples of occasions when they have followed up on their interests

Aptitudes

Have students take an aptitudes test:
- Work BC Career Compass
Have students take the Knowledge Inventory in MyBlueprint.ca
Have students look at their report cards and reflect on what it tells them about their academic aptitudes
Discuss the aptitudes that characters in literature, popular culture or social media have used in order to succeed
Have students select the aptitudes that they feel describe them best and give examples of when they have used those aptitudes

Values

Students can complete an online Values Sort activity
Students can also complete a Values Sort using the printed cards available to the right, which will provide a richer discussion
Have students give examples of how they live by the values that they have chosen as their Most Important Values

What is an Aspiration?

An aspiration is a strong hope, dream, or goal. The idea of aspiration has a positive, upward connotation. We aspire to be or to become something that is seen as better than what or where we currently are. People can have social aspirations, career aspirations, and personal aspirations. One way to think about the meaning of aspiration is to consider the idea of reaching for the stars. We may never quite make it, but the act of looking and moving upwards is what makes our day to day life meaningful.

Aspirations

Have students come up with a common understanding of what an aspiration is
Have students reflect on how interests, aptitudes and values can contribute to our aspirations
Have students select a social aspiration, a career aspiration and/or a personal aspiration that is important to them
Have students reflect on how their interests, aptitudes and values influence their chosen aspirations

Developing the Draft of a Personal Profile

Students can develop the draft of their personal profile using any medium. For example:
- Students can create a work of art that illustrates the interests, aptitudes, values and aspirations that they have identified
- Students can introduce themselves in a video or audio podcast
- Students can write a short text using examples from their life to illustrate how their interests, aptitude and values have influenced their aspirations
Reflect with students, after the Draft Personal Profile is completed, on how the process of developing their ideas contributed to clarifying their understanding of themselves.
Students are encouraged to upload their Draft Personal Profile to their Portfolio in MyBlueprint, so that it is available when they write a more formal personal profile in Secondary IV or V.
