Occupations of People in His or Her Community

Teaching ideas:

• Brainstorm, with the class, as many different occupations as you can of people that students know well in their community
• Agree on a definition of occupation with the class
• You may want to have students create a family tree showing the occupations of the people in their families
• You may want to explore how many different occupations people have in your school or a nearby business
• Have students create a list of interview questions that they can ask parents, friends, community members and family about their occupations
• Explain the difference between listing information they know and developing an idea, or expressing their knowledge in their own words
• Have students report, in their own words, what they discovered about occupations when they interviewed people in their community,
• Some examples of how students can present their knowledge are:
  • orally, in a group discussion
  • they can create an audio or video recording of their interview and their own summary of what they learned
  • they can produce a media representation (poster, PowerPoint) of the occupations they researched
