Academic and Career Guidance Content in Elementary
The Academic and Career Guidance Content introduced in Grades 5 and 6 begins the process of helping students understand:
- who they are, personally, socially and as a student
- what the next step to secondary school will be
- the occupations of the people in their family and community
- the link between what they are learning in Cycle 3 and their academic and personal future
These are addressed under three domains, Knowledge of Self, Knowledge of the World of School and Knowledge of the World of Work.
The focus in this cycle is on the Knowledge of Self, as four of the six content items are in this domain. The transition to Secondary school is also of prime importance to Grade 6 students. (Knowledge of the World of School) Occupations are introduced from the point of view of the student looking around their immediate surroundings to explore what the people they know do for a living.
