The Academic and Career Guidance Content introduced in Grades 5 and 6 begins the process of helping students understand:
These are addressed under three domains, Knowledge of Self, Knowledge of the World of School and Knowledge of the World of Work.
The focus in this cycle is on the Knowledge of Self, as four of the six content items are in this domain. The transition to Secondary school is also of prime importance to Grade 6 students. (Knowledge of the World of School) Occupations are introduced from the point of view of the student looking around their immediate surroundings to explore what the people they know do for a living. (Knowledge of the World of Work)
Three of these content items are usually taught in Grade 5. The remaining three are taught in Grade 6.
Produce a description of himself/herself in terms of interests and aptitudes.
Select examples where his/her attitudes, behaviour or values are influenced by others, and examples where he/she influences others.
Compare the work methods and duties of a student with those observed in the world of work
Select various personal characteristics that will be useful in preparing for the transition from elementary school to secondary school.
Compare the main differences and similarities between elementary school and secondary school
Develop a description of the occupations of people in his/her community
