Personal Perceptions and the World of Work

This ACGC item is directly related to the Financial Education program in Secondary V.

The competency "Takes a position on a financial issue" from the Financial Education program requires students to select an option... Two of the three financial issues of the program of study—entering the workforce and pursuing an education—are particularly relevant for this ACGC item.

In order to meet the objectives of this ACGC item students must:

Verify personal perceptions regarding the reality and requirements of the world of work.

The Learning Strategy for this ACGC is VERIFY. This means that the lesson must explicitly teach students how to verify the information they have about the World of Work.

VERIFY:

Ensuring the quality or the coherence of information or knowledge produced based on external criteria or requirements. (Bégin 2008)

Examples:

identify the characteristics or attributes of available information or knowledge; confirm the presence or absence of elements targeted in connection with the objectives or selected criteria, etc.

Students will:

Take stock of their personal perceptions of the world of work:
- Select criteria that they will use for their verification
- List their current perceptions of the world of work in terms of those criteria
Identify a means to collect information that either supports or contradicts their perceptions of their selected criteria
- Carry out the selected strategy to verify their perceptions relative to the criteria they have chosen
Reflect on how verifying information has either confirmed or adjusted their perceptions of the World of Work

Worksheet

This is a sample of the kind of worksheet a student might complete during the process of verifying perceptions about a particular occupation.

Students should be encouraged to explore occupations by:
- Interviewing people who are currently working in the field
- Participating in Student for a Day programs at vocational training centres like those at LBPSB, or CEGEPS
- Contacting an online mentor through Academos
- Attending work with a parent or family friend by participating in Take Our Kids to Work Day in November
- Students in the Work Oriented Training Path can participate in a internship with an approved employer
- Participating in extracurricular activities that require skills similar to those in the chosen occupation
- Volunteering to work in settings that require the same skill set as the chosen occupation (e.g. health care, education, daycare, senior care)
- Carrying out a Life Project that explores some of the interests and aptitudes and values that are required in an occupation (e.g. constructing something, exploring an artistic medium (music, dance, visual arts etc.), creating a financial plan for an anticipated activity)
Hold class discussions to share how students' perceptions of the world of work differ from the realities they encountered during their explorations
Students may be familiar with the "What I Really Do" memes, and may want to create one for the occupation(s) that they have investigated
